Around the world, the burden of heart disease, stroke, diabetes and other vascular disease are reaching epidemic proportions. Several Canadian and international studies show that the South Asian population, comprising the largest single cultural group in B.C., has double the risk of coronary disease compared to the general population. The combination of diet and lifestyle choices and genetically pre-determined to have insulin resistance with known risk factors such as diabetes and hypertension is prevalent in South Asian populations in India and in Canada. Organised by Canada India Network Society and co hosted by Fraser Health and Simon Fraser University the conference is a first step to reduce the burden of cardiovascular disease in both countries. Presentations on the latest research, population health and health promotion, social policy, and technology from leaders in both countries will provide action plans that will work to improve the health of South Asians around the world.
