Work Permit
Follow these steps to work in British Columbia, Canada
If you are not a Canadian citizen or permanent resident (landed immigrant) of Canada, you will need a valid permit to work in British Columbia, Canada. A labour market opinion (LMO) must be conducted before Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) will issue a work permit.
To successfully receive a positive LMO and Canadian work permit, take the following steps:
- Register with the appropriate professional association.
- Apply for a position with Fraser Health, and receive an offer of employment for a regular-full time position.
- Provide the necessary information to Fraser Health so we can request a positive LMO from Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC).
- Apply for a work permit through a visa office at a Canadian embassy, high commission or consulate abroad.
- You must pass a medical examination before coming to Canada. Your visa office will provide you with instructions before you see a designated medical practitioner.
NAFTA work permit program
Under the NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) program, some professionals from the United States and Mexico are not required to have a LMO conducted in order to obtain a work permit. To qualify, you must work in one of the professions listed in the NAFTA professions list.
