Dental Care

Dental prevention services for Aboriginal people are offered both on and off reserve throughout Fraser Health in rural and urban settings. The Health Promotion & Prevention Dental teams work in collaboration with community health teams to strengthen relationships and build community capacity among Aboriginal communities to ultimately prevent dental disease. The Dental teams assist families in reducing barriers in accessing dental care through outreach dental clinics offered every three months in Aboriginal communities such as Katzie First Nation and Kwantlen First Nation, as well as  in urban settings at the Kla-how-eya Healing Place Primary Health Clinic.

Fraser Health has entered into a partnership agreement with Health Canada’s, Children’s Oral Health Initiative (COHI).  COHI is an early childhood tooth decay prevention initiative that provides service for children up to eight years of age, their parents and caregivers, and pregnant women. Through the partnership the program is provided for on-reserve children in the First Nation communities of Boothroyd, Spuzzum and Boston Bar. Plans are in place to expand this program to Shxw’ow’hamel First Nation in September. In the first six months of 2009, 52 children in Fraser Health received prevention dental services such as fluoride varnish and fissure sealants on-reserve through COHI and Fraser Health’s Dental Program.
