Preventers or Controllers

Usually peach, orange, brown or red in colour. Anti-inflammatory drugs:

  • Flovent
  • Pulmicort
  • Qvar
  • Beclomethasone
What they do When to take them How fast they work
  • prevent and treat inflammation, swelling, and mucous build-up
  • take regularly
  • NOT to be used for quick relief
  • works slowly
  • may takeseveral weeks before you feel an effect on your asthma
Quick Relievers Usually blue in colour. Short-acting bronchodilators:
  • Ventolin/
    Salbutamol
  • Bricanyl
  • Airomir
What they do When to take them How fast they work
  • relieves symptoms quickly
  • opens airways by relaxing the muscles of the airways
  • short-term use
  • use only when asthma
    symptoms present
  • commonly used during
    attacks or 15 minutes before
  • works quickly, usually within
    minutes to relieve symptoms
    exercise or exposure to cold air
