Avoiding H1N1

In addition to getting your seasonal and H1N1 flu vaccination shots, there are many things you can do to avoid catching or spreading the flu.

  • Wash your hand regularly with soap and water, or use and alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing and throw away immediately - or cough or sleeve into your elbow.
  • Eat nutritious foods, including plenty of fruits and vegetables
  • Get plenty of sleep and exercise regularly
  • Don't share cutlery, drinks or towels with anyone
  • If you smoke, try to quite (visit www.quitnow.ca) and do not allow others to smoke in your house or car
  • Stay home if you are feeling unwell with flu symptoms
  • If you live with animals (domestic or farm), wash your hands thoroughly after contact with them
  • Clean areas that are touched by many people regularly (such as bathrooms and kitchens)
  • Consider using teleconferencing or video conferencing, telephone and emails if many people at your workplace are sick
