What is HIV?HIV is the human immunodeficiency virus. The virus kills and damages the cells of the body's immune system. Infection with the HIV virus leads to a gradual destruction of the body's ability to fight infection and certain cancers. What is AIDS?AIDS, Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, is a technical term for one stage of the HIV disease. This stage is usually attained after many years of infection. That stage is characterized by severe destruction of the immune system by the HIV virus. People diagnosed with AIDS are much more susceptible to get life-threatening diseases called opportunistic infections, which are caused by microbes such as viruses or bacteria that usually do not make healthy people sick. Is there a cure?At the present time, there is neither a vaccine to prevent HIV infection nor a cure for HIV or AIDS. The disease is both incurable and 100 percent preventable (MOH, 2003).
