HIV and AIDs in Fraser Health

Bookmark and Share

There are about 2600 people living with HIV in the Fraser Health region. About a third of them are not aware of their HIV infection. So they can potentially transmit it without even knowing.
In 2007, 96 Fraser Health residents where newly diagnosed with HIV.

Heterosexual contact and men having sex with men were the most frequently cited risk factors for transmission, followed by injection drug use.

HIV infection rates among Aboriginal Peoples are much higher than in non-aboriginal, especially  in aboriginal women.

Co-infection with other diseases also poses a concern, particularly Hepatitis C and sexually transmitted diseases. For example, it is estimated that 90 percent of injection drug users in the lower mainland are infected with Hepatitis C.
