What is swine flu?

Swine flu is a respiratory disease caused by the Influenza A H1N1 virus that regularly causes outbreaks of flu in pigs.

The symptoms of swine flu in people can be similar to the symptoms of a regular flu infection which may include fever, cough, headache, general aches, fatigue and other symptoms. Some people with swine flu have also reported runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

There are a number of commonsense actions you can take to stay healthy:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective;
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. When you cough, do so into your sleeve if possible;
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.

If you have a fever or cough illness, regardless of where you have travelled, stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them. See a health care provider if your symptoms become worse but call ahead of time to let them know you have fever or cough illness.

You can call HealthLink BC at 8-1-1, 24 hours a day/seven days a week if you have more questions or if feeling ill.
