Emergency Response for Diabetes at School

Learn how to respond in an emergency

  • Follow the child's medical care plan  
  • Give the child a sugar source (an orange, juice or pop)
  • Stay with child until their symptoms are relieved (usually 10-15 minutes) and notify parents as directed in the care plan
  • School staff are not responsible for administering insulin or glucogon

If child is unable to swallow:

  • Call 911 and the school first aid attendant
  • Stay with the child until help arrives
  • Notify parents
  • Do not give food or drink
