An evaluation of the Accu-Chek Inform II Glucose Meters has shown that two essential steps are often being missed in their usage.

What's happening?

An evaluation of the Accu-Chek Inform II Glucose Meters has shown that two essential steps are often being missed in their usage:

  1. Labelling QC Vials: Vials expire three months after opening. Discard the vial if the date when it was opened is not written on the vial. Use medication expiry labels to assist.
  2. Discard First Drop: Contamination occurs easily if the second drop of blood is not used. Discard the first drop of blood whether it is used for a patient test or quality control test.

How do these impact students and faculty instructors?

Students and faculty instructors in nursing placements are required to complete the Accu-Chek Inform II Glucose Meter/Glucometer course in the LearningHub among other orientation requirements. This mandatory course includes a competency quiz. Students and faculty instructors are expected to apply the practices above in clinical settings to ensure that patients receive quality care.
