On May 10th, another important milestone was reached for Royal Columbian Hospital’s redevelopment. A Request for Proposals, or ‘RFP’, was issued to the three companies shortlisted last December to design and build Phase 1 of the project — Bird Construction, EllisDon, and PCL Constructors.

‘This RFP gets us one step closer to shovels in the ground’, said Barry Pearce, the redevelopment’s Chief Project Officer. ‘It formally asks the three companies to submit their proposals of how they’ll design and build our new Mental Health and Substance Use Wellness Centre, Energy Centre, and underground parkade.’

‘To inform their proposals, they’ll reference over 1,000 pages of detailed information and floorplans our team has developed which outline Royal Columbian’s requirements for space, layout, equipment, scope and budget,’ noted Pearce.

‘Our team has put an enormous effort into getting us to this milestone, and incorporating the insights and expertise of our physicians, clinical and support teams, consultants, and patients and their families,’ he continued. ‘Now it’s time to invite our three shortlisted construction candidates to apply their expertise, too.’

‘After we receive their proposals this December, we’ll evaluate each one for the company’s organizational structure and resources, experience, staff, approach, methodology, design, and costs,’ explained Pearce. ‘The goal is to announce the successful candidate by early 2017.’

‘It will be a great way for us to start the new year,” Pearce continues. ‘But the real excitement begins when we break ground on the mental health facility and start major construction in early 2017! That’s a day Fraser Health and the Royal Columbian will really celebrate!’
