Request for local Aboriginal art or artist services public art project

Fraser Health Aboriginal Health and the Chilliwack Fraser Cascade Aboriginal Wellness Advisory Committee are seeking interest from artists/artist teams to have Aboriginal themed art displayed outside the Chilliwack General Hospital main entrance.

In January 2016, Fraser Health launched the first Aboriginal Wellness Advisory to create a culturally safe health care experience for self-identifying Indigenous peoples accessing services along the continuum of care. To advance this objective, Chilliwack General Hospital is looking to ensure the physical spaces in which healing occurs are reflective and representative of the Indigenous individuals, families and communities in the region.

The chosen art would be required to be installed by April 15, 2019.

This call is open to all artists and artist teams. Submissions must be received no later than November 1, 2018, 4:00 p.m.

A selection panel of health care leaders, design professionals and community leaders and representatives will review submissions. The selected artist/artist team may be asked to develop their concepts in more detail if required. The selected candidate(s) will be asked to present their design to the selection panel in a PowerPoint presentation. One proposal will be commissioned by December 15, 2018.

Submissions will be reviewed by the panel based on:

• Reflection of the history and heritage of Indigenous communities in the Chilliwack, Hope, Agassiz area.
• Appropriateness of the piece to a healing environment.
• The safety of the art display for a hospital environment (no sharp edges, etc).
• The ability to be mounted to an exterior brick wall, withstand outdoor conditions and demonstrate durability.
• How easy the art is to clean and maintain without causing damage to the piece.
• If the art appeals to a broad population.
• Little or no infrastructure (lighting or structural) required to display the art.

• Name, email address and contact phone number.
• What type of art you would like to submit or create.
• Samples, photos and descriptions of the art and its meaning/significance.
• Letters of reference or portfolio for previous art completed.
• Estimated cost of art.
