As Fraser Health continues to roll out its new clinical information system, MEDITECH Expanse, generative artificial intelligence (AI) is being leveraged to support staff and medical staff in their learning.

With a myriad of MEDITECH Expanse learning resources available, the Virtual AI Assistant helps staff and medical staff quickly find the learning resources they need, when they need them.

Leveraging the power of Amazon Web Services (AWS), the Virtual AI Assistant integrates various AWS tools, including natural language processing and comprehension, artificial intelligence and machine learning. Each tool serves a unique purpose in enhancing user experience and providing accurate assistance.

To ensure the Virtual AI Assistant meets the needs of our staff and medical staff, teams conducted pre-production testing with select user groups to refine and optimize the Virtual AI Assistant’s capabilities. Proof of concept demonstrations garnered positive feedback, and it is expected that this new feature will significantly improve staff and medical staff’s ability to quickly locate essential information on MEDITECH Expanse functionality and workflows, particularly through the initial months of implementation.

"In collaboration with Amazon, we are delighted to unveil a pioneering AWS-powered Virtual AI Assistant,” says Alim Sunderji, executive director, Digital Technology Services. “This cutting-edge AI marvel effortlessly navigates data silos, enhancing the ability to search for information that supports staff and medical staff with the implementation of MEDITECH Expanse.”

While the initial focus is on supporting MEDITECH Expanse learning, the Virtual AI Assistant is expected to expand its support to other Fraser Health programs in the future.

The introduction of AWS Virtual AI Assistant technology, combined with the clinical transformation that is underway with MEDITECH Expanse, are great examples of how we are transforming health care using digital modalities.
