Older adults who live in the Fraser Health region from Burnaby to Boston Bar can access an online pilot program that keeps them engaged and active, while caregivers are offered respite.
The online pilot, called NetCARE Connect at Home, is open to everyone over the age 65 who lives in the Fraser Health region. The program, funded by a Health Excellence Canada grant, combines bingo, fall prevention education and exercise—all in a one-hour session.
“These important services help older adults with increased cognitive stimulation, maintain or improved mood, increased physical activity and increased knowledge of how to avoid frailty,” says Chandan Dhillon, interim regional director of home and community services, Day Program for Older Adults, Respite, Caregiver Initiatives and Convalescent Care. Additionally, by engaging older adults in these activities, caregivers are offered respite.
“By providing this program online, we are able to reach more people,” says Dhillon. “It’s especially beneficial for people living in rural communities.”
Sunita Singh, a program participant, shares, "NetCARE Connect at Home motivates me to get off the couch and be more active. As a retired person at home, it gives me something enjoyable to do. It motivates me, and I look forward to it every week. I enjoy playing Bingo and the staff are all friendly and wonderful. Today, even though my arm was sore from getting my vaccines, I still participated because I enjoy the program so much. I look forward to more online programs."
Dhillon says the program’s top priority is offering increased activity to older adults and ensuring their safety. “The technology allows our staff to virtually monitor participants, ensuring their safety and well being.”
Kim Speers, activity worker, Netcare Day Program for Older Adults, says, “I feel that this service builds connections between our participants in the community and those at Netcare. It brings cohesiveness, fun and a sharing of knowledge with the trivia component, making it an interactive experience.”
Dhillon says this pilot is exactly what they aim to support—older adults living at home with dignity.
This pilot project provides 16 spaces per session, offering participants a flexible opportunity to engage at their convenience. Once participants register they are not required to attend every session.
