When Michele’s son faced a sudden health scare, she relied on Fraser Health Virtual Care, receiving fast, convenient care that turned a potentially stressful day into a simple one.

While volunteering with the Red Cross, Michele received a distressed call from her 15-year-old son, Matthew, who had woken up with a very sore, swollen toe. Concerned it might be an infection, Michele sprang into action. “I had used Fraser Health Virtual Care before and knew it would be the best option for quick help,” she says.

Fraser Health Virtual Care—launched in 2020—is staffed by registered nurses and dietitians who provide virtual medical advice for non-urgent care needs.

“My son has had some health issues, and one of the reasons I like Fraser Health Virtual Care is because they have access to your Fraser Health personal health record,” she says.

Michele connected with a nurse who asked for a photo of Matthew’s toe, which she emailed. When the nurse confirmed it looked serious, she booked an appointment for Matthew at the Metrotown Urgent and Primary Care Centre for an in-person examination.

“When we arrived for the appointment, we were in the exam room within minutes of checking in at triage. The doctor had already seen the photo I had sent to the nurse and knew the background. It felt like a VIP experience—I know that sounds silly, but it did,” Michele laughs. “I was so impressed with how easy and seamless the process was.”

Fortunately, Matthew didn’t need any follow-up care. “Everything was done shortly after 5:00 p.m., and I was still able to get home to make dinner, so there was little disruption to our day.” Michele says. “Fraser Health Virtual Care helped a lot by providing clear options and connected care quickly without having to resort to the emergency department. It made a potentially stressful situation so much easier.”
