Anchors are meant to hold things steady, but anchor institutions have the potential to do so much more. They can action big visions that move communities forward.
Fraser Health and SFU are both deeply rooted in the region, with a shared opportunity to influence the social and environmental factors that impact health. Through approaches like responsible purchasing, workforce development, and sustainable investments, we are uniquely positioned to turn values into action.
On June 4, more than a hundred participants came together for an Anchor Institution Collaboration event organized by Fraser Health and SFU. The event focused on building a roadmap for community well-being, equity and sustainability across the region.
“The energy and shared commitment show what’s possible when we align around a common goal,” says Kate Keetch, director, Research and Evaluation Services.

As two of the region’s largest public institutions, our influence extends beyond delivering health care and education. As major employers, purchasers and community partners, everyday decisions directly and indirectly shape local economies. This presents an opportunity to build healthier, more resilient communities.
“Some of the work we do as an anchor institution mirrors society,” says Dr. Ingrid Tyler, chief medical health officer. “Anchor institutions are tied to the social determinants of health and every decision we make every day is a chance to improve health and planetary health.”
Potential areas of collaboration include:
- Values-based procurement
- Safe and inclusive cultural spaces
- Low-carbon food and menus
- Natural spaces that contribute to healthy ecosystems and biodiversity
- Living wage and impact hiring
- Family well-being and supports
- Sustainable investing
- Accessible and affordable housing
- Community partnerships
