
Burnaby Hospital’s health-care pavilion, expanded support facilities improve access to care.
People in Burnaby and surrounding communities are now benefiting from expanded access to care, including emergency, maternity, and mental-health and substance-use services, as part of the Burnaby Hospital redevelopment project opens new facilities.
On Tuesday, March 10, 2026, the new health-care pavilion and expanded support facilities building opened to patients, marking a milestone in transforming the hospital into a modernized medical and surgical health-care campus.
“Our government is delivering modern health-care facilities that support high-quality, patient-centred care,” said Bowinn Ma, Minister of Infrastructure. “Burnaby Hospital is opening the doors to state-of-the-art facilities that will provide expanded services and new technologies in a modern, comfortable environment.”
The new facilities are significant part of the Burnaby Hospital redevelopment project, which includes renovations to existing buildings on the campus.
Spaces designed for healing
The new facilities will improve the patient experience in a modern, nature-inspired environment designed for comfort and healing.
“This is a big day for people in Burnaby who need timely care close to home,” said Josie Osborne, Minister of Health. “The new health-care pavilion provides timely, local care, offering stronger support in times of crisis, enhanced services for new parents, and vital mental-health and substance-use programs for those who need them most.”
Enhancing care environments for patients, families and care teams
- The new six-storey health-care pavilion includes 83 beds, primarily in single-patient rooms with ensuite washrooms. It will be home to:
- a mental-health inpatient unit with a secured outdoor space to enhance healing.
- maternity and neonatal intensive care units with dedicated family areas, including couches for partners.
- a medicine unit with negative-pressure rooms and outbreak zones to enhance infection prevention and control.
- outpatient clinics to support maternity, pediatric, neurology, multiple sclerosis and diagnostic cardiology patients.
- a spacious and welcoming cafeteria
- The expanded support facilities building features:
- a larger Burnaby Community Emergency Department, adding 23 new treatment spaces and a dedicated mental-health zone.
- six spacious operating rooms in the Jim Pattison Surgery Centre.
- a modern medical device reprocessing department.
- a kitchen designed for preparing delicious and nutritious meals to support patients’ healing.
- additional education and collaboration spaces for clinical teams.
- a state-of-the-art energy centre.
The cost of this project is estimated to be $633 million, funded by the Province and the Burnaby Hospital and Community Foundation.
This project is part of the Province’s work to improve and expand health-care services for people throughout B.C.

What's changing to modernize Burnaby Hospital
The Burnaby Hospital redevelopment project will transform the hospital into a modernized medical and surgical health-care campus.
Replacing aging infrastructure
- Burnaby Hospital has not had any major upgrades in more than 40 years.
- This part of the redevelopment project is focused on renewal. When fully complete, the project will replace aging infrastructure, meet current building and clinical standards, and enhance the patient experience through modern, comfortable facilities.
- In addition to the newly constructed health-care pavilion and expansion of the support facilities building, this part of the project includes renovations to the hospital’s facilities, such as the outpatient lab, pharmacy and optimization centre that opened in 2025.
Design inspiration from Burnaby’s diverse landscapes
New entrance and parking information
- Patients and visitors can now enter the hospital via the existing west-wing entrance, or the new east and south entrances from 6 a.m. until 10 p.m., and from 10 p.m. until 6 a.m., enter via the emergency entrance.
- Volunteers are on site at Burnaby Hospital’s entrances to help with wayfinding.
- More underground parking is now available, accessible from the main parkade.
- Pick-up and drop-off stalls are available at the west wing and east entrances.
