An ultrasound scan is a safe, painless imaging procedure that uses sound waves to create pictures of the inside of your body.

  1. Requesting medical imaging

Visit your health care provider for an assessment. If they recommend an ultrasound, they will send a requisition form to a location that provides ultrasound services.

Please ensure your provider has your correct name, address, phone number and Personal Health Number (PHN) for your requisition.

  2. Booking your appointment

Your health care provider will contact you with your appointment date, time and location. Appointments are scheduled based on the urgency and type of scan ordered.

To change or cancel an appointment, please contact the ultrasound location where your appointment is booked, as soon as possible.

  3. Attending your appointment

    Preparation

You will receive preparation instructions from your health care provider. Please review them before your appointment and follow all instructions to avoid any delays.

    During the scan

You may be asked to change into a hospital gown or shorts. Depending on the body part being scanned, you may be asked to sit, lie down, or change positions during the procedure. A gel is applied to the skin, and a probe is gently pressed over the area being examined to capture images.

    Bringing people with you

Companions that are essential to your physical and/or emotional support may be permitted to accompany you into the ultrasound scan room. Inform us if you wish to include an essential care partner.

Please ensure children 12 years of age and under have adult supervision at all times. They cannot accompany you during the exam or be left alone in the waiting area. Children are welcome to come into the exam room with another caregiver at the end of a pregnancy scan.

    Taking pictures or video recordings

No pictures or video recordings are permitted at any time while you are in a hospital or receiving an ultrasound. If you are receiving an ultrasound for a pregnancy, we will print and provide you pictures of your developing baby at your appointment, using our ultrasound printer.

  4. Accessing your health records

Results are sent to the health care provider who ordered them. Contact your provider to review the results and talk about the next steps. Results are usually available within a week of the scan. Some results may also be available on your Health Gateway. Learn more about accessing your health records.
