  • Indigenous resources

    First Peoples Principles of Learning (First Nations Education Steering Committee) 
    Developed by Indigenous knowledge keepers, this document emphasizes common elements within many indigenous communities that promote learning in culturally relevant ways. 

    Sexual Wellbeing Learning Model Fact Sheet (First Nations Health Authority - FNHA) 
    This model is a strengths-based, culturally grounded resource that promotes healthy sexuality as an essential part of holistic wellness. It is structured around four core values: protecting communities, healthy relationships, identity, and adulthood/rites of passage. 

    Blood Born Disease and STI (FNHA) 
    The First Nation Health Authority’s Blood-Borne Disease and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STBBI) program focuses on cultural safety, prevention, education and community capacity building to reduce the spread of sexually transmitted infections and blood borne pathogens.  

    Yúusnewas (YouthCO) 
    Yúusnewas is a youth-driven initiative that focuses on sexual health and harm reduction through Indigenous worldviews, integrating cultural teachings and addressing stigma around blood borne pathogens. 

    Native Youth Sexual Health Network (NYSHN)
    An Indigenous youth and community-led organization that promotes sexual and reproductive health, through a cultural and social justice lens (including HIV/AIDS awareness, culturally safe sex education and Two Spirit gender and sexuality education). They have created resources including You are made of medicine, a mental health peer support manual for 2SLGBTQIA+ indigenous youth, and a guide on staying safe online for Indigenous youth. 

    Chee Mamuk (BC Centre for Disease Control) 
    This Indigenous-led program at the BC Centre for Disease Control delivers culturally safe, community-driven education and training on HIV, STIs and hepatitis. It supports inclusive sexual health education in B.C. by blending traditional knowledge with public health practices, empowering Indigenous communities. 

    Indigenous Youth Wellness - Ask Auntie Journey (Provincial Health Services Authority) 
    A free, culturally grounded wellness program for people who identify as indigenous girls aged 10–14, offering guidance on identity, relationships, body changes and emotional well-being. The program is Inspired by traditional teachings and the role of Aunties, it combines videos, activities and group discussions to create safe spaces for learning and empowerment. This program was created in partnership with local indigenous communities in British Columbia. 

    Moosehide Campaign
    A B.C.-born movement, including a National Day of Action, to engage all people to end gender-based violence, promote reconciliation and encourage healthy masculinity. 

    Abortion Access and Indigenous Peoples of Canada (Action Canada)
    This factsheet highlights how colonization has disrupted traditional Indigenous reproductive knowledge and practices. It provides historical context of the reproductive rights of indigenous peoples, and emphasizes the importance of ensuring culturally safe, accessible abortion care for Indigenous communities.

    Ethno-racial minority youth (ERMY) (Sexuality Education Resource Centre) 
    This brochure is designed for ethno-cultural minority youth. It empowers youth to navigate identity, respect boundaries, and build healthy relationships while addressing the unique challenges they may face due to racism, cultural expectations, and systemic barriers. 

    I Belong Program: Services for newcomer 2SLGBTQIA+ refugees (Mosaic BC) 
    This program offers specialized support for 2SLGBTQIA+ refugees and newcomers, providing a safe, inclusive space to build community and access essential services. 

    Information Sheets SmartSex Resource (BC Centre of Disease Control) 
    Translated sexual health information available in English, Farsi, Arabic, Korean, French, Simplified Chinese, Vietnamese, Punjabi, Traditional Chinese and Spanish.  Open the link to the data resource page and choose your preferred language. 

    Let's Talk About Sex: A Muslim Parent's Guide to Having "The Talk" With Their Kids (Heart To Grow) 
    This resource guide for Muslim parents provides culturally sensitive tips to discuss sexual health topics with children and youth. 

    Learning Sex Ed Through Art - An Inuit perspective (The Walrus) 
    This article describes an Inuit youth art initiative to learn about sexual health in a culturally inclusive way. 

    Inclusive practice in the prevention of sexually transmitted and blood borne infections among ethnocultural minorities (Sex Information & Education Council of Canada) 
    This resource highlights the unique challenges faced by ethnocultural minority communities in accessing sexual health services in Canada. It emphasizes the need for culturally safe, language-accessible and stigma-free education and care to reduce barriers and improve health outcomes related to STIs and blood-borne infection.

    This website is a sexual health initiative designed to support people with diverse abilities. It helps youth and educators by offering accessible resources and workshops that promote inclusive and comprehensive sexual health education.

    Differing Abilities (Teaching Sexual Health)
    Teaching Sexual Health website’s Differing Abilities section provides educators with inclusive, evidence-based sexual health lesson plans and resources tailored to support students with diverse abilities.

    Talking About Sexuality in Canadian Communities (TASCC)
    This resource provides information for youth with disabilities, and for educators and other adults supporting youth with disabilities. TASCC is an Alberta-based group of interdisciplinary professionals committed to supporting healthy sexuality.

    Action Canada for Sexual Health & Rights
    A national organization that promotes sexual and reproductive health and rights through a variety of resources such as Beyond the Basics.

    Sexual Health Education for Youth with Physician Disabilities (Sex Information & Education Council of Canada - SIECCAN)
    This resource supports educators in B.C. by offering evidence-based, inclusive guidance for teaching sexual health to students with physical disabilities.

    Sexual Health Promotion with Autistic Youth Toolkit (SIECCAN)
    This SIECCAN toolkit provides resources to support inclusive, evidence-informed strategies for teaching sexual health to neurodiverse students.

    Family Support Institute of BC (FSI)
    An events calendar that features a variety of free online sessions and community gatherings designed to support families, caregivers and individuals with diverse abilities.

    Sexual and Gender Minorities in Canadian Schools (Well at Work by EdCan)
    This article explores how specific policies that support sexual and gender minorities (SGMs) in Canadian schools can improve the well-being and inclusion of 2SLBTQIA+ students and staff.

    Being LGBT in School (Government of Ireland)
    This resource from Ireland offers practical strategies for creating inclusive, respectful school environments that prevent homophobic and transphobic bullying. It aligns well with B.C.’s SOGI-inclusive education goals.

    Healthy Relationships Program for Two-Spirit, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Queer, Intersex, and Asexual + (2S/LGBTQIA+) Youth (Western University)
    This program is a trauma-informed, strengths-based mental health promotion designed for small groups of youth to build skills, well-being and resilience.

    Peer support directory (Trans Care BC)
    A province-wide directory of peer support groups for trans, non-binary and Two-Spirit individuals, as well as their families and caregivers. These groups provide emotional support, resources and connection with both online and in-person options.
