Self-Initiated STI/HIV Testing (SIT Testing)

What is self-initiated sexually transmitted infection/human immunodeficiency virus (STI/HIV) testing (SIT testing)?

STI/HIV SIT testing is a free and easy way to get tested for STIs (chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis) and HIV without seeing a health care provider.

How can I get STI/HIV SIT testing?

• STI/HIV SIT lab requisitions are available at any Public Health Unit.
• STI/HIV SIT testing is not recommended if any of the following applies to you:
  • Have symptoms of an STI.
  • Had recent sex with someone with a confirmed or suspected STI.
  • Have other needs such as STI treatment or medication.
  • Want to speak with a nurse or doctor.
  • Do not have a BC Services Card (care card).
  • Do not want to use your real name.

Where do I take the lab requisition?

• Make an appointment or drop-in without an appointment at a Life Labs location near you
• Book an appointment at a Fraser Health laboratory
• Bring your BC Services Card and the Laboratory Requisition form
• Do not go pee for 2 hours before your appointment

What will happen at the Lab?

• They will draw blood to test you for HIV and syphilis.
• They will ask you for a urine sample to test for chlamydia and gonorrhea.
  

  Note: The urine test won’t check for chlamydia or gonorrhea in your throat or anus. If you need those tests, please see a health care provider.

How can I get my results?

• After seven to 10 business days, you can get your results online at HealthGateway.gov.bc.ca.
• If you can’t get your results online, you can call 604-777-6705
  

  Note: Different infections can take different lengths of time to show up on a test after an exposure (the “window period”). Some infections such as HIV and syphilis may take up to three months to be detected. It can take up to 90 days for an STI to show up on a test. If your results are negative but a potential exposure occurred within the previous three months, consider repeat testing.

If your results show you have an STI or HIV:

• If your results show that you have an STI or HIV, a public health nurse will contact you.
• They will provide support, get you the treatment you need and refer you to further care if needed.
