Measles has been confirmed in a passenger arriving in Vancouver on a flight from Delhi, India.

To all health care providers:

The case was infectious while on the following flights:

  • China Southern Airlines Flight CZ 3028 from Delhi, India on June 23rd 2018 arriving in Guangzhou, China
  • China Southern Airlines Flight CZ 0377 from Guangzhou, China arriving in Vancouver on June 23rd 2018

Passengers on this flight have been exposed to the virus and may be residents in the Fraser Health region. Passengers are being advised to review their measles vaccine history and get a measles containing vaccine if not protected. They are considered protected against measles if:

  • Born before 1970 (1957 for health care workers), or
  • Have a history of measles infection, or are
  • Born after 1970 (1957 for health care workers) and have received 2 doses of a measles containing vaccine (e.g. MMR)

If they are unsure about their measles vaccine or disease history, please ask them to contact their local Public Health Unit.

Please maintain vigilance for measles, especially among susceptible patients presenting with a febrile rash illness with cough, coryza, or conjunctivitis and with a potential exposure history. Images of measles rash can be found at www.cdc.gov/measles/about/photos.html.

If a patient presents with a history of fever and rash, isolate immediately and have them put on a mask. Please advise patients to wear a mask if they present to any health care facility, such as a laboratory, emergency department or other clinic. Suspect patients in the emergency room should be placed under airborne precautions.

If you suspect measles, please collect an NP swab and urine for measles virus isolation and blood for serologic testing (measles IgG and IgM). Physicians who suspect measles are asked to call the Medical Health Officer at 604-587-3828 to initiate immediate public health follow-up and to guide laboratory testing. After office hours please call 604-527-4806, and ask for the Medical Health Officer on-call.
