Patients and families across Fraser Health are another step closer to receiving care at the new Jim Pattison Acute Care Tower, as the project reached a major milestone: substantial completion.

With construction now mostly complete, Fraser Health can begin the many activities required to prepare the building and our teams for the first patients in early 2026.

“This milestone marks an important achievement for our construction and hospital partners and our redevelopment team,” said Chief Project Officer Michelle Blake. “This is an extremely challenging and complex construction project at one of the busiest hospitals in British Columbia. Congratulations to everyone involved.”

Designed with patients in mind, the new tower features more beds, private rooms and state-of-the-art equipment and technology to enhance comfort and care. Ten floors of clinical services will include a 75-bay emergency department with a satellite medical imaging unit and a surgical and interventional ‘superfloor’ with new operating rooms, as well as two new maternity operating rooms.

There will be more than 350 new underground parking stalls, facilities for support services teams and a rooftop heliport. Staff amenities include break rooms, change rooms with lockers, and a designated bike storage area.

Now that construction is substantially complete, the hospital’s support services teams will begin moving into the building this summer, and the project team will outfit the hospital for patients. Training and orientation for new and existing Royal Columbian Hospital clinical staff will begin this fall. As many hospital services will relocate, our focus will be on preparing staff and physicians for a seamless transition to the new building.

Renovations to existing hospital buildings to support the increase in services added by the new tower are also moving forward. Construction of Phase 3 interim early works is scheduled to begin later this year.
