Ask about nicotine replacement therapy and support with cultural use of tobacco.

At Fraser Health, we support a smoke-, vapour- and tobacco-free environment at all our sites. This includes smoking tobacco, using e-cigarettes, smoking cannabis (medical or recreational) and other vapour products.

Research shows smoke-free policies help smokers quit, reduce temptation and create safer environments for employees and patients by eliminating exposure to second-hand smoke .

If you need support while you are in the hospital or are ready to quit anytime we have resources to help you:

  • While you are in hospital: If you are a patient at a hospital, we offer nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) such as patches, gum, lozenges or inhalers for the duration of your stay. Ask your care provider for more details.
  • Support after you go home: After you are discharged from the hospital, you can access free NRT through the B.C. Smoking Cessation Program. This program provides non-prescription NRT products like patches, gum or lozenges at no cost to all B.C. residents. It also covers prescription smoking cessation drugs for those who qualify for Fair PharmaCare. Visit a drugstore and talk to a pharmacist to learn more.
  • QuitNow support: You can access free and confidential one-to-one coaching to stop smoking through QuitNow. They offer support via their interactive online service, text, chat, email and phone (call 1-877-455-2233). QuitNow provides phone services in 300 languages and has an online community to support your smoke-free journey.

Cultural use of tobacco

We respect the cultural use of tobacco and support Indigenous patients and family members who request spiritual and cultural ceremony that may involve fire and smoke, such as smudging. To request ceremony, contact our Indigenous Health Liaisons program at 1-866-766-6960.
