The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Royal Columbian Hospital will get a significant upgrade when the new Jim Pattison Acute Care Tower opens.

More space and new technology will provide an enhanced experience not only for infants and their families but also for the staff and medical staff who already offer outstanding care.

“I’m excited about the extra space that will lead to increased privacy for families,” says Stacey Rice, project leader, Clinical Operations for the redevelopment project. “Staff will have all the resources they need close at hand, and the space we’re gaining will support best practices.”

In addition to the new NICU rooms being private, there will be room for a parent to stay overnight and more space for extended family members, such as grandparents, to be involved. The extra space on the unit will also create more opportunities for the health care team to educate parents and extended family members, supporting them to be active participants in care during their infant’s hospital stay and feel confident and prepared as they take their baby home.

New technologies, such as computers in each room, an updated nurse call system and a new barcode system for handling breast milk will contribute to improved clinical practices and workflows.

Watch Stacey Rice, project leader, Clinical Operations, give a tour of the new NICU at the Jim Pattison Acute Care Tower under construction at Royal Columbian Hospital.

The Royal Columbian Hospital redevelopment project is a multi-phase project that will increase the hospital’s capacity, introduce advanced medical technologies and improve the health care environment for patients, staff and medical staff.
