Medical imaging is the process of capturing detailed images of the body for diagnosing and treating health conditions.

How to get a medical imaging test

  1. Requesting medical imaging

    Visit your health care provider for an assessment. If they recommend a medical imaging test, they may:

    • Send a requisition form to a medical imaging location.

    or

    • Provide you with a printed form for a walk-in test.

    Please ensure your provider has your correct name, address, phone number and Personal Health Number (PHN) for your requisition form.

  2. Booking your appointment

    X-ray services

    Walk-in X-ray services are available at most Fraser Health locations, but sometimes you will need to book an appointment.

    • Before you go, call the location near you to confirm hours and service information.
    • Bring your printed X-ray requisition form with you, if you have one.

    Ultrasound, MRI, CT scans and other medical imaging services

    Your health care provider will contact you with your appointment date, time and location. Appointments are scheduled based on the urgency and type of test.

    To change or cancel an appointment, please contact the location where you are receiving the test as soon as possible.

  3. Attending your test

    You will receive preparation instructions from your health care provider. Please review them in advance and follow all instructions to avoid any delays.

  4. Accessing your health records

Your results are sent to the health care provider who ordered them. Contact your provider to review the results and discuss next steps. Some results may also be available in your Health Gateway. Learn more about accessing your health records.

  • Can I book my own medical imaging appointment?

    You can book an X-ray appointment yourself if you have a requisition form. Call an X-ray location near you to confirm hours and appointment information. For all other medical imaging services, including ultrasound, MRI and CT scans, your health care provider will contact you with your appointment date, time and location.

  • What if I can’t make my appointment or need to change it?

    To change or cancel an appointment, please contact the location you are receiving imaging at, as soon as possible.

  • I had my imaging but have not gotten results yet. How can I see my results?

    Your results are sent to the health care provider who ordered them. They are typically shared within one week. Please contact your provider to review the results and discuss next steps. Some results may also be available in your Health Gateway. Learn about accessing your health records.

  • Why is my appointment scheduled at a different facility than the one my provider requested?

    We may book your appointment at a different nearby facility to help you receive your medical imaging test sooner. We are happy to reschedule you at a location of your choice without losing your place on the waitlist, however other facilities may have longer wait times.

  • Why can’t the imaging technologists tell me what they see?

    Imaging technologists are responsible for completing exams to the highest quality possible. They share the results with a radiologist who will review these images to provide a detailed report to your health care provider.

  • My symptoms have changed. What should I do?

    If your symptoms have changed, please see your health care provider again. They may send in an updated request for imaging.
