Phase one of a proposed three phase redevelopment of the Royal Columbian Hospital was approved by the B.C. Government in May. Phase one includes a new mental health and substance use facility with underground parkade, an Energy Centre, helipad relocation, and new temporary parking.

In late 2016, we’ll start construction of the mental health and substance use building on the Allen Street parking lot. Before then, you’ll notice projects happening at our hospital to prepare our site, including the one below that starts the week of September 28th.

What’s happening

We’ll begin investigating underground site services to prepare for Phase One construction (sewer, water, and electrical).

How long it will take

Work will start Monday Sept. 28 and last approximately two weeks.

Area affected

Grass area on the hospital’s southeast corner, along Keary Street, kitty corner to the Sapperton Skytrain entrance, across from the Translink Building.

Scope of work

Grass and soil will be removed to allow for digging, construction equipment, and investigative work. Topographical surveying will also be conducted in the area.

Impact to neighbours

Access along the hospital sidewalk in the work area may be blocked for about 1 hour around Oct 8th and 9th between the Allen Street parking lot and the hospital’s Health Care Centre parkade entrance as equipment is moved into, and out of place. Use the Translink Building side of the sidewalk during that time.

Keary Street will remain open.
