Help shape the plans for the new Royal Columbian Hospital.

Patient-centred care is a key guiding principle in Royal Columbian Hospital’s redevelopment. It recognizes the patient and family are at the heart of every decision, empowered to be equal partners in care with their needs, preferences, and cultural beliefs valued.

Patient and families

We regularly seek the opinions of people who’ve stayed at our hospital. Patient and family input is solicited on a number of topics ranging from space design, technology, and equipment, to food and community notices.

Indigenous partners

Royal Columbian Hospital is located on the unceded and traditional homelands of the Qayqayt and Kwantlen First Nations. We are committed to involving Indigenous voices in a variety of ways throughout the redevelopment project. We engage with the Indigenous community through an ad-hoc Indigenous working group, surveys, information booths, events and special topic meetings. We facilitate cultural safety and humility discussions between clinical teams and Indigenous communities as needed. We also provide opportunities for project staff and clinical staff to increase cultural safety awareness.

For phase 1, we commissioned a Kwantlen First Nation artist to create the design for the glass etchings on the windows of the Mental Health and Substance Use Wellness Centre to convey a calming and healing space.

For Phase 2, the concept for the interior design uses imagery, colours and textures that celebrate local flora and fauna and our Indigneous partners and their culture, traditions and wellness practices. At street level, both the inside and outside of the building will evoke a riverbank with colour and imagery from nature. We will continue to work with our Indigenous partners to create a welcoming space for Indigenous patients, family members and visitors that supports culturally safe care.

We make regular presentations to the Sapperton Residents’ Association. Participate in one of their upcoming meetings to learn more and ask questions about the redevelopment project.
