Ridge Meadows Hospital

Ridge Meadows Hospital has 157 acute care beds. As a community hospital, it provides primary and secondary acute care and specialty services including 24/7 emergency, ambulatory care, day surgery, general and internal medicine, rehabilitation, maternity care, general surgery, orthopedics, urology, critical care, pharmacy, medical imaging, and a medical laboratory for both inpatient and outpatient needs. The site also offers a continuum of adult psychiatric and social services available on an inpatient and outpatient basis.

In 2016/17, Ridge Meadows Hospital had 40,338 emergency visits, provided care to 6,710inpatient and 9,113 surgical daycare cases, delivered 765 newborns, and saw 93,082 visits to ambulatory care. 

Ridge Meadows Hospital is the local community hospital for both Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge, but with the network nature of Fraser Health’s care community, local residents access services at Ridge Meadows Hospital as well as other Fraser Health hospitals.

Home and community care services 

• The Maple Ridge / Pitt Meadows Home Health office provides nursing support, older adult day programs, case management, respite care and more.
• How to access: Home Health services can be accessed by calling the Home Health Service Line at 1-855-412-2121. The home health team will start the assessment process, assign a case manager and then conduct an assessment of the person’s care needs to determine what home health services are required. Some clients may access home health services through a Home Health Liaison when they have been admitted at a hospital and cannot return home without support.

Residential care and assisted living 

• We provide subsidized residential care for adults who can no longer live safely or independently at home due to complex health care needs.
• Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows currently has one Fraser Health owned and operated facility and two contracted facilities. These facilities provide 361 residential care beds in the community.
• How to access: Subsidized residential care beds can be accessed by calling the Home Health Service Line at 1-855-412-2121. The home health team will start the assessment process, assign a case manager and then conduct an assessment of the person’s care needs to see if they are eligible for residential care. If a person already has a case manager and is receiving care at home, they can speak directly with their case manager about their desire for residential care.

Prevention

Community forums and events: Forums on the overdose crisis with the Community Network and Maple Ridge Division of Family Practice, as well as a community dialogue with the Greg Moore Youth Centre. Staff also attend Ridge Meadows Ministries community dinners each week to share information. The School District held two Fentanyl Forums, one in 2016 and one in 2017, in collaboration with Fraser Health and other partners.

School support: Fraser Health partnered with School District 42 on a workshop on prevention and health promotion with youth in response to the overdose crisis. This event brought together 90 School District representatives, mental health and substance use workers, and public health service providers to learn about evidence and trauma informed education skills to activate youths’ resiliency while reducing potential harms related to substance use, including overdose events.

In partnership with the School District Parent Advisory Committee, Fraser Health created a fact sheet for distribution at school graduations to parents and youth.

Education, training and public awareness campaigns

Naloxone training: Naloxone training is available through the Maple Ridge Public Health Unit, Ridge Meadows Ministries (Salvation Army), Rain City, Alouette Addictions and Stride with Purpose Health Van (Lower Mainland Purpose Society for Youth and Families). Training has been provided to a number of community groups already, including the Maple Ridge Division of Family Practice, Youth Wellness Clinic and Alouette Correction Centre for Women.

Internal campaigns: For release in fall 2017, an internal communications campaign will target frontline emergency department staff, including those at Ridge Meadows Hospital.

Overdose prevention sites: In December 2016, Fraser Health opened overdose prevention sites in four communities, including two in Maple Ridge. These sites ensure a health care professional is nearby to administer naloxone if a person consumes substances and overdoses. When a person is receptive, the sites also play an important role in connecting them to treatment, as well as other health care and community supports. 

Take Home Naloxone kits and harm reduction supplies: Take Home Naloxone kits and harm reduction supplies are available at Maple Ridge Public Health Unit, Maple Ridge Mental Health Centre, Ridge Meadows Ministries (Salvation Army), Alouette Addictions, RainCity Housing and Stride with Purpose Health Van (Lower Mainland Purpose Society for Youth and Families). Mobile services are available in various locations across the City including the St. Anne Camp.

Safe sharps disposal: Sharps disposal services are available at the Maple Ridge Public Health Unit, Stride with Purpose Mobile Health Van, Alouette Addictions and Ridge Meadows Ministries. 

Safe sharps recovery: Alouette Addictions, RainCity Housing and Lower Mainland Purpose Society for Youth and Families undertake regular sweeps of key locations, including the St. Anne Camp in order to identify and safely dispose of any discarded sharps. Community members who find discarded sharps may contact Stride with Purpose Health Van to arrange collection.

Surge outreach: Monthly, on weeks when income assistance cheques are issued and during periodic surges in overdose volumes, public health nurses and Mental Health and Substance Use clinicians conduct outreach to areas with high volume of overdoses to distribute Take Home Naloxone, intervene in overdoses, assess and refer people to treatment.

Treatment

Opioid Agonist Treatment clinics: Opened a clinic in Maple Ridge to improve access to first line treatment for opioid addiction (medications like Suboxone and methadone). Since opening in mid- July, there have been 170 clients served.

Intensive Case Management (ICM): In Maple Ridge, Fraser Health partnered with BC Housing to implement an ICM team to support people with a severe substance use disorder who face complex challenges related to health, housing, and poverty, and face barriers in accessing existing health or social services. 

Outpatient substance use programs: Provided by a contracted agency in Maple Ridge, outpatient substance use programs include school-based prevention services, individual and group counselling, family support, psycho-education and opioid agonist treatment. 

Substance use treatment beds: Maple Ridge residents requiring treatment services have access to supports throughout the region. The 465 beds are a combination of sobering centre mats, withdrawal management, short-term access to recovery, stabilization and transitional living residence and intensive residential treatment beds. The following services are located in Maple Ridge:

Stabilization and Transitional Living Residences (STLR): 219 beds, including 4 for youth, for individuals post-detox that require additional support. 26 of these beds are located in Maple Ridge.

Intensive Residential Treatment (IRT) beds: 165 IRT beds for adults (including 4 for youth and 22 for young adults 19-24 years old) in five owned and operated/contracted programs. 60 of these beds are located in Maple Ridge. IRT  Services and Supports offer an intensive program experience for people 19 years and older with serious substance use issues within a residential setting, supported by qualified and trained health care providers. Programs include group-based and individual educational and counselling sessions, meals, recreational, social and life-skills building opportunities. Programs are usually 35-70 days.

Riverstone Home/Mobile Detox/Daytox: Medically supported residential and home services for people in Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Mission, Agassiz, Hope and Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows communities.
