To date, Fraser Health’s Mental Health and Addiction Services have transferred 160 of its designated 267 mental health beds at Riverview. Planning for new locations for the remaining 107 beds is currently underway and all will be operational in 2012. Locations and programs include:
Tertiary Adult Rehabilitation Program

Location: Chilliwack General Hospital
Timelines: Targeted construction completion: May 2011. Targeted occupancy: August 2011.

This 20-bed facility will provide care for adults with serious, complex and persistent mental illness. Treatment is individualized with a focus on recovery to each client’s level of capability. Individuals will stay on the unit for six months or longer.

Staff will work with residents to teach basic living skills such as meal preparation, housekeeping, leisure planning and money management and vocational skills.  Residents will be encouraged to contribute to and utilize community services.

The facility will have private rooms as well as gathering places to accommodate meaningful activity.
The physical environment will provide a home-like, comfortable, non-institutional ambiance that supports opportunities for quiet, private time as well as social contact and interaction among residents, staff and visitors.
Tertiary Older Adult Acute Program

Location: Peace Arch Hospital
Timelines: Targeted construction completion: July 2011. Targeted occupancy: September 2011.

This 24-bed facility will provide care for individuals over 65 with serious, complex and persistent mental illness as well as chronic medical conditions. These individuals could have psychosis, mood disorders, complex dementia and concurrent disorders. The facility will have private and semi-private rooms.

The facility will provide short-term assessment and treatment (from two weeks to three months) focused on advanced diagnostics, intensive psychiatric intervention, specialized care and acute stabilization. It will allow for timely transfer to acute specialized care when required and back to residential or community resources when appropriate.
Tertiary Adult Acute Program

Location: Surrey (across from Surrey Memorial Hospital)
Timelines: Targeted construction completion: March 2012. Targeted occupancy: June 2012.

This 59-bed facility will provide care for adults with serious, complex and persistent mental illness who need intensive treatment and support. The facility will provide treatment focused on advanced diagnostics, intensive psychiatric intervention, specialized care and acute stabilization.

The facility will include:

  • 12-bed Intensive Care Unit (includes six Vancouver Coastal Health Authority beds)
  • Two Assessment and Treatment Acute Units (30 beds)
  • 17 Intensive Tertiary Rehabilitation (ITR) beds

Intensive Care Unit
The role of this unit will be to care for adults needing short-term (two to four weeks) intensive psychiatric treatment, support and stabilization.

Assessment and Treatment Acute Units
The role of these units will be to care for adults needing a longer stay (two – six months) for intensive treatment, support and stabilization than provided in the ICU.

Intensive Tertiary Rehabilitation (ITR) beds
This mental health program is for adults with serious, complex and persistent mental illness requiring more intensive long-term psychosocial rehabilitation. Treatment is individualized with a focus on recovery to each client’s level of capability. Individuals will stay on the unit for six months or longer.

Location: Vancouver
Timelines: Targeted opening: spring 2011

Fraser Health and Vancouver Coastal Health are partnering to develop a highly specialized 20-bed Neuropsychiatry facility. This group of clients require highly specialized staff and physicians and for that reason Fraser health and Vancouver Coastal Health have decided to pool their resources to offer the most robust service possible to clients.
