![]() Positive Health Clinic In the past, people living with AIDS had no option but to travel to Saint Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver for care. Now, people can receive care at our Positive Health Services Clinic in Surrey Memorial Hospital, which sees 200 people annually. The clinic is run by an HIV physician specialist, nurses, pharmacist, social worker and nurse practitioner three days a week. “The Positive Health Clinic empowers people with HIV to take charge of their health choices,” says Amrit Rai, Manager Public Health. “The bonus is that the client’s quality of life goes up!” The clinic’s small but mighty team has improved health assessments and specialized treatments for clients closer to home and they are part of an important local referral network of more than a dozen community agencies. One of the major goals of Positive Health Services is to not work in isolation but rather in partnership with other clinics and services both within Fraser Health and with community partners such as Kla’How’Eya Aboriginal Centre, Purpose Society and SHOP. The Positive Health Clinic is extending its hours to 5 days a week in the spring of 2011, when it moves to the new Surrey Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre. The new Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre is the first of its kind in BC; it combines day surgery with diagnostic procedures with community services all in one building.
