Award recipients are selected annually by the India International Friendship Society, a voluntary organization established to forge greater unity and integrity among the people of Indian origin living around the world. The intent of the Bharat Gaurav Award (literally translated into English means Pride of India) is to honour individuals of Indian origin for outstanding leadership in fields such as education, medical services, engineering and architecture. The citation to Dr. Mathew read,” you have given a fight in life and your worthy example does inspire others towards certain remarkable achievement”. Dr. Mathew is a long time advocate and has dedicated many years to the care and support of individuals living with mental illness. He came to Ridge Meadows Hospital in 1996 where he continues to provide clinical support and leadership. He is a clinical assistant professor of psychiatry and an examiner at UBC, he is a published author, and is involved in many volunteer groups, including serving on the Board of the Ridge Meadows Hospital Foundation and is the founding president of the Ridge Meadows South Asian Cultural Society. “This is wonderful and much-deserved recognition of an individual who has done so much for so many,” said Lois Dixon, Fraser Health Executive Director, Mental Health and Addictions. “Our Mental Health and Addictions Leaders are so pleased that Dr. Mathew has been honoured in this way.” | |
