Premier Christy Clark today announced a significant milestone with selection of VanMar Constructors as the preferred partner to enter into negotiations with Fraser Health for the development of a community health centre and campus of care in Mission.

“Today’s announcement marks an important step forward for the community health project that will benefit families in Mission and the Fraser Valley,” said Premier Clark, who saw first-hand where the new construction is expected to take place when she toured Mission Memorial Hospital. “The health centre and campus of care will provide a wide range of health services for families, from taking children to see a family doctor to offering seniors who need residential care the option of continuing to live in the community they call home.”

The construction of a community health centre and campus of care will improve access for the growing population in the Fraser Valley to health service on land next to Mission Memorial Hospital.

“This is great news for Mission residents," said Maple Ridge-Mission MLA Marc Dalton on behalf of Health Minister Michael de Jong. "MLA Hawes and I have been advocating for Mission Memorial Hospital and I am so pleased to see these major health care projects moving forward in our community."

"For those of us in Mission who have worked to ensure Mission Memorial Hospital remains vibrant and functional, today's announcement puts to rest the community concerns,” said Abbotsford-Mission MLA Randy Hawes. “The campus of care and the new 200 bed health facility will ensure we can have our health needs met in Mission and our seniors can remain in their own community near their families and loved ones. This is a great day for Mission."

A central principle of the community health project is to provide the community with the opportunity to receive client-centred care and integrated medical assessments outside a hospital environment. The community health centre will help alleviate emergency ward congestion by providing better services for those with chronic illness, while the campus of care will help keep families together by allowing seniors to receive care while remaining in their own community.

“Fraser Health sees this project as an exciting prototype for communities throughout the Fraser Valley,” said Fraser Health CEO and president Dr. Nigel Murray. “It builds on our commitment to be innovative in providing better care and improve health outcomes.”

The community health centre is expected to be up to 27,000-square-feet (2,500-square metres) with programs such as primary care, a diabetes and seniors’ clinic, public health, home health, mental health and addictions, and potential lease space for community partners such as physicians and retailers.

The campus of care for seniors is expected be about 128,000-square-feet (12,000-square-metres) in size with about 200 residential care beds for people with complex 24/7 care needs, and a day program for older adults. This new facility will add 25 per cent more residential care beds to the community and replace out-of-date buildings with a modern facility that will feature single occupancy rooms and various neighbourhoods that will allow residents close access to essentials including meals, amenity spaces, and clinical staff.

The total building cost is still to be finalized with $22 million from the Fraser Valley Regional Hospital District (FVRHD) and the remaining funds provided by Fraser Health and with anticipated support from the Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation. The Mission community health project is part of the community health plan developed in partnership between Fraser Health, the FVRHD and the District of Mission in 2008. The plan guided the health authority and the district in working together to address the current and future health needs of the community.

“The Fraser Valley Regional Hospital District has an outstanding track record in helping fund projects that support the delivery of health care to the residents of the eastern portion of Fraser Health,” said FRVHD chair Chuck Stam. “We will be funding seniors’ care with the campus of care and look forward to seeing the final design plans for a building that will allow seniors to age in dignity.”

A project agreement and approvals are expected in late spring, with ground breaking targeted for early summer and opening for patients in 2013.
