Guru Nanak Niwas is a four-storey building with the common area and amenities located on the first floor with suites above.  Owned and operated by Progressive Intercultural Society (PICS).

How do I access assisted living?

Access to subsidized assisted living units is through a Home Health assessment. For more information on subsidized units, contact the local Home Health office nearest you. Please do not contact the Operator directly regarding subsidized units.

Building amenities

We serve South Asian vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals in addition to western meals.  A washer and dryer are located on each floor. Housekeeping is provided as needed.

Language, culture, religious affiliations

The residence is designed specifically for the South Asian community but everyone is welcome.  Staff members are fluent in English, Punjabi, Hindi, Bengali, Urdu and Fijian Hindi languages.

Type of accommodation

49 publicly subsidized units.  Each suite includes a fridge and stove. Residents provide their own furnishings.


Residents pay 70% of their after-tax income which covers: 1) monthly rental accommodation; 2) hospitality services: two meals and two snacks daily, weekly housekeeping, flat laundry, etc.; 3) personal care; and 4) on-site emergency response system.

Residents on income assistance pay a flat rate.

Items not included as part of the monthly fee include: telephone, cable, hydro, personal laundry, household and toiletry supplies, medications, personal care products and insurance.

Special recreation opportunities

The Activity/Volunteer Coordinator schedules recreational programming.


Residents must be able to move around in their own apartment with or without the use of mobility aids.  Electric wheelchairs designed for indoor use may be permitted with pre-approval of the Executive Director.  Will be developing a storage policy for motorized scooters.

There is no smoking indoors at this community.

Safety/security features

Each resident is provided with an Omega wireless pendant system linked directly to staffing pagers 24 hours daily; staff receive information on the caller, any special medical problems the resident has and the location of the person in need.  Security cameras are in the stairwells, garage and on the grounds.

Neighbourhood/community Amenities

The residence is near two shopping malls with grocers, drugstores, banks, restaurants and various shops. Several medical and dental services are also nearby. Within two to three blocks there is a Temple and the South Asian seniors centre. A library and public transportation are nearby.

Offers hospitality and personal assistance services to seniors and adults with disabilities of all ethnic and South Asian cultural backgrounds.

Ground level parking is available and is located under the second floor of the building.
