Language, culture, religious affiliations

Finnish Manor supports the cultural backgrounds of our residents but specifically focuses on Finnish culture. All food is home cooked; Finnish cultural foods and baking have a prominent part in the menu. We celebrate all Canadian holidays and special focus is placed on the Finnish cultural celebrations. We speak several languages; 65% of staff also speaks Finnish.

Accreditation status

Accreditation is an external peer review process to assess and improve the services health care organizations provide to their patients and clients, based on standards of excellence set by Accreditation Canada or the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).

Philosophy of care

We provide a loving home for our residents. We promote individual growth, optimum quality of life by being open to new ideas and change, and by working together with our residents and the community at large.

We believe that the genuine care and comfort of our residents is our highest mission. The Finnish Manor experience should enliven the senses, instill well-being and enrich the lives of everyone. We truly care for each resident and they are the primary focus of our efforts. We treat each other with respect and dignity, valuing individual and cultural differences. We work constantly to earn the respect and trust of all parties we interact with by acting fairly and honourably.

Type of accommodation

Total beds: 60; 60 publicly subsidized residential care beds.

Basics include a bed, night table and dresser, and a call bell at the bedside and in the bathroom to summon help when needed. There are privacy curtains between beds; phone and cable TV jacks are at each bedside.

You may also bring belongings that can be accommodated safely at the bedside. Our philosophy is: Finnish Manor will be your home from now on, bring your “home” with you.

Residents pay 80% of their after-tax income which covers the cost of food and accommodation.

Special recreation opportunities

Our activity department provides residents with Finnish videos, movies, music, books and magazines. All activities are led in Finnish and English.  A full recreation and activity program is available seven days a week which takes into account our residents’ interests and hobbies. We use a minibus to take residents for outings.

We cannot accommodate motorized scooters.  Finnish Manor is completely wheelchair accessible on one level.

Pet policy

We have cats for company and there is an aquarium in the living room. If a resident wants to bring in a pet, we will assess each situation individually; if the pet is found to be suitable the resident carries the cost of pet care.

Smoking policy

Finnish Manor is a non-smoking residence; there is a smokers’ gazebo outside for able residents to go outside to smoke safely and independently.
