Perinatal Settings

NOTE: The following information applies to the Perinatal setting and should be used in conjunction with Fraser Health Infection Control Guidelines for Acute and Primary Care Facilities from www.fraserhealth.ca and the BC Perinatal Health Program at www.bcphp.ca.

Pregnancy and Influenza

Pregnant patients with Influenza are at increased risk of complications in 2nd and 3rd trimesters of pregnancy. Fetal distress is possible with severe maternal illness.

Patient information

Provide patients with Information for Pregnancy, Breast feeding and H1N1 Flu Virus

Accommodation/Visiting

Pregnant Patients with ILI

  • Isolate “suspect” cases on Enhanced Droplet/Contact precautions in a private room or cohort with similar cases
  • Negative pressure room for non-urgent aerosol generating procedures (AGMP)*  if possible

Parents with ILI

Parents with ILI should not enter the nursery; however, they may visit their neonate under the following conditions:

  • Neonate in a separate room or secluded area
  • Parents clean hands, wear procedure mask and clean gown 
  • If feasible with respect to the care requirements of the neonate

Neonates of pregnant women/mothers with ILI

  • Neonates should be observed closely for signs of respiratory illness
  • Neonates may room in with mother on Enhanced Droplet Contact Precautions
  • Neonates requiring admission to the nursery including those requiring AGMP should be cared for in an isolette and separated 6 feet from other infants. 

Visitors to mothers with ILI

  • Visitors are restricted to 1 or 2 support people 
  • Visitors must clean hands and wear protective equipment as per Enhanced Droplet Contact Precautions

Aerosol Generating Medical Procedures (AGMP)
