Suspect H1N1 cases in Residential Care or Assisted Living

Guidelines for Facility Based Residents

Due to anticipated increased activity in Emergency Departments, it is recommended that residents with influenza like symptoms receive care in their community facility. If it is necessary to transfer a resident to acute care, please be aware of the following information.

Residents sent out for Acute Care Assessment

  • It may be necessary to transfer residents from residential care facilities to acute care for assessment and treatment due to Influenza like Illness (ILI) symptoms.
  • After the assessment, it may be determined that hospitalization is not necessary for the management of this illness.
  • The resident’s community facility will be contacted and it is expected that the resident will be taken back into their home for ongoing management.
  • Residents will not remain in hospital unless medically necessary.
  • Infection Control Guidelines have been provided as part of the Respiratory Outbreak Protocol to protect staff and residents from the development of Influenza like Illness.
