Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder

Bookmark and Share

The diagnoses on the spectrum are:

  • Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS)
  • Partial Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (pFAS)
  • Alcohol-Related Neuro-developmental Disorder (ARND) and
  • Alcohol-Related Birth Defects (ARBD)

A baby's brain is sensitive to alcohol while developing. A person with FASD may have problems with learning, remembering things, attention span, communicating, doing math and/or controlling their behaviour. FASD is a lifelong disability. While there is no cure, it is preventable. THERE IS NO SAFE AMOUNT OF ALCOHOL DURING PREGNANCY. Those with FASD can, with the right supports, approaches and services, lead happy and productive lives.

Ideally FASD-related diagnoses are made by a trained, interdisciplinary clinical team using established criteria.
