20 Weeks to Personal Preparedness

Get your emergency kit ready - one week at a time

Week 1: Portable Container
Find a container to hold your supplies.
Week 2: Three Day Supply of Water
Stock your kit with at least a three-day supply of water for every family member and don't forget to include water for pets.
Week 3: Packaged Foods
Stock your kit with several varieties of packaged foods, canned meats and dried fruit. Include a manual can opener.
Week 4: Creat an Out of Area Contact
Plan for each family member to call or e-mail the same out-of town contact person in the event of an emergency.
Week 5: Get a Radio
Listen to the local radio or television stations warnings and advice.
Week 6: Local Hazards
Learn about hazards. Know the hazards in your community.
Week 7: First Aid Kit
Prepare a first-aid kit that includes prescription medications, eyeglasses, bandages, sterile gauze pads, tape, scissors, tweezers, antibiotic ointment, hydrogen peroxide and other items such as over the counter pills.
Week 8: Home Safety Procedures
Hydro, natural gas and water shut off tips.
Week 9: Home Evacuation Planning
Determine the best escape routes from your home.
Week 10: Flashlights
Flashlights, extra batteries and spare bulbs are all important, disasters can stike at any time (especially at night) and with out warning.
Week 11: Garbage Bags and Cutlery
Stock your kit with both large and medium-sized plastic garbage bags (orange or yellow make good visible signals).
Week 12: Spare Clothing and Gloves
Add a change of clothing for each family member to your kit.
Week 13: Additional Food
Add some dried soups and other items such as peanut butter, evaporated, canned or powdered milk to your kit.
Week 14: Important Papers
Assemble important documents such as wills, insurance papers, medical records, credit card numbers, inventory of possessions, identification, etc.
Week 15: Personal Items
Add personal items such as toilet paper, handi-wipes, soap, detergent, toothbrush, toothpaste, comb, sanitary supplies, diapers, etc. to your emergency kit.
Week 16: Large Bucket and Tools
Get a large bucket with a tight-fitting lid to use as a toilet, and put it with your emergency kit.
Week 17: Sleeping Bags and Blankets
Add sleeping bags or blankets (foil blankets take up less space) and consider adding plastic emergency ponchos to your kit.
Week 18: Whistle, Pocket Knife and Spare Keys
Add pocket knife, a whistle and spare sets of house & car keys to your kit.
Week 19: Neighbourhood Planning
Meet with neighbours to discuss emergency preparations and the possibility of sharing large items such as BBQ’s, shelters and generators.
Week 20: Store Your Emerency Kit
Store your emerency kit in an easy to access part of your home where they are least likely to be damaged or destroyed.
