Healthy communication development

Our community speech language pathologists support speech development for children aged 0-5 years.  They assess, diagnose and treat preschool children with hearing, communication, and related disorders.

Early detection is critical

With early detection and treatment of speech and language concerns, a child can have skills similar to their peers by the time they start kindergarten.

What services are provided?

Our speech language pathologist looks at: pronunciation, how well the tongue and lips move, how children understand and use language, and if there are any voice, hearing, or stuttering problems.

In therapy sessions, they will:

  • Develop treatment plans for the child
  • Show parents how to help children learn better ways to talk
  • Use play (games, books, toys) as a fun way to help children learn
  • Check the children's progress on an on-going basis

How can I refer a child to this service?

Anyone can refer the child to our speech and language services, with the parents' consent.  Children entering kindergarten will be seen by a speech-language pathologist at their school.

After referral, a speech-language pathologist will assess each child. This assessment will help identify the child's speech, language, and communication needs, as well as the type of therapy and information needed.

How much does it cost?

These services are free-of-charge.
What is the age limit?

These services are provided for children 0-5 years.
