Emergency Response to Seizures

Tips on how to respond to seizures

Bookmark and Share
  • Follow medical alert care plan
  • Protect from injury; if possible move to a safe place on the floor
  • Do not restrain or try to hold the child still
  • Do not put anything in the mouth
  • Clear the area of other children
  • Call 911 unless parents have otherwise instructed staff

After a seizure the child will probably be confused and very tired when they wake up.  Let the child rest, then encourage them to go about their regular activities

After the seizure has stopped and if THE CHILD IS STILL UNCONSCIOUS:

  • Put them in the recovery position (onto the side with the face gently turned down)
  • Stay with child until fully recovered
  • Notify parents
