Remember you did what seemed best at the time to survive. There is nothing un-masculine about that.

Here are some emotional responses that you may have following an assault:

Depression from feelings of:

  • Shame
  • Losing control
  • Not being strong enough
  • Self blame
  • Increased anger or range
  • Sexual identity confusion
  • Loss of manhood
  • Fear of being perceived as gay
  • Social isolation

Post traumatic stress symptoms:

  • Nightmares
  • Flashbacks
  • Preoccupation with assault memories

These feeling may create:

  • Destructive behavior and increase aggression
  • Decreased self image
  • Thoughts of suicide or attempts
  • Increased use of alcohol of drugs
  • Problems with sexual performance

Getting support or counseling after an assault may serve to reduce all of these emotional responses.
