Florence's Story

"I should have called my doctor right away but the weekend was coming so I decided to wait until his office opened on Monday," said Florence.

Later that weekend, Florence's health worsened, making breathing difficult, which resulted in a trip to the Emergency Room (ER) at Surrey Memorial Hospital. The 88-year old was received by the emergency health care team and immediately seen by Kathy Wong, the Emergency Geriatric Nurse who cares for frail seniors meaning individuals who are weak and have more than one health concern. Following a thorough assessment, including diagnostic testing, Florence and her family learn that she has pneumonia complicated by preexisting Congestive Heart Failure.

"It happens all the time people are shy about calling their doctor after hours," said Dr. Urbain Ip, Medical Director at Surrey Memorial Hospital.

According to Dr. Ip, most physician offices have a doctor on-call after hours, so if you call the number, an on-call doctor will phone you right back.

"We want people to keep their doctor involved in their health planning and in helping to manage health concerns. We also want them to be safe and not sorry when it comes to health. And for urgent health matters, they should call 911 or come directly to the hospital emergency department don't take chances with serious symptoms."
