Hand hygiene is everyone’s responsibility. Patients, residents, clients and family members are important members of the health care team and each person has a role to play in hand hygiene.

It's ok to ask

Don’t be afraid to politely ask health care providers, visitors and family members to wash their hands. Patients, residents and clients may also ask anyone on the care team to provide them with the appropriate products to clean their hands as well.

Before your health care worker begins examining you or providing care – or if you are not sure if he/she has cleaned his/her hands - it’s okay to ask...

“Would you mind cleaning your hands in front of me?”

Give germs the rub
Hand hygiene, including washing your hands with soap and water or cleaning your hands with alcohol-based hand rub, is a proven way to reduce the spread of germs.

Alcohol-based liquid or foam hand sanitizers are often known as alcohol-based hand rub.
