Would you like to improve your skills in assessing the quality of evidence? Critical appraisal is a necessary part of working in a health care environment. It helps one decide whether a piece of information is reliable or can be applied in your setting. This workshop will provide tips on how to assess journal articles and make decisions about whether to use the information in them.

Quantitative research methods

Quantitative research is undertaken to seek a better understanding of a phenomenon using empirical methods. The goal for this workshop is to increase knowledge and understanding of the process for conducting quantitative research studies. This workshop will cover important considerations for choosing the right design for quantitative research questions.

Introduction to research protocol development and grant writing

At the end of this half-day workshop, you will:

• Understand how to locate research protocol templates.
• Identify aspects of your research proposal that grant reviewers are most interested in.
• Frame a research question and protocol that is feasible, methodologically clear, and addresses an important gap in the evidence.

Setting up research spreadsheets and building datasets
January 12, 2027 | 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

This workshop is designed to provide beginner participants with hands-on experience in setting up an Excel research spreadsheet and starting to build a research dataset. We will discuss best practices in designing data spreadsheets and developing data dictionaries to help capture your data, followed by hands-on and interactive practice in designing data spreadsheets and entering data.

Survey and questionnaire design
March 2, 2027 | 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Surveys are one of the most common ways to collect data, but it’s harder to design a good survey than most people would guess. To ensure that your survey will be effective and useful, this workshop will cover key elements such as sample size, identifying which concepts to measure and question types, as well as practical considerations for doing a survey in Fraser Health.

Focus groups and interviews
March 3, 2027 | 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.

This workshop covers the essentials of focus groups and interviews for gathering qualitative data. You’ll learn to design focus groups, develop moderator skills to foster discussion, conduct effective interviews, and gain basic qualitative data analysis skills while avoiding common mistakes.

Best practices in retrospective chart review for research
March 24, 2027 | 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

This workshop is designed to review the process of completing a chart review from start to end. Topics such as advantages and limitations, standardization of data collection procedures, sample size, and sampling strategies will be discussed to ensure that data collection processes produce reliable and representative data.

Analyzing research data using Excel
April 7, 2027 | 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

This workshop is designed for participants proficient in using Excel who want to grow expertise in analyzing numerical data. We will provide an overview of how Excel can be used to organize and analyze your data. We will discuss the best practices in designing data spreadsheets and developing data dictionaries. Using mock data, we will visually inspect data, use descriptive statistics, and perform statistical hypothesis testing for hands-on and interactive learning.

Economic evaluation: What, why and how?

Health care systems throughout the world are faced with providing ‘value for money’ at a time of rising health care costs, increasing demand for health care, and a finite set of available resources. This session is designed to provide attendees with an introduction to economic evaluation – a systematic approach to decision making characterized by inputs (costs), outputs (consequences) and scarcity. Whether you’re thinking of conducting an economic evaluation, or you’re interested in learning more about the topic, this session is for you.

Evaluation 101: Conducting evaluation for decision making
January 20, 2027 | 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

This workshop will help you discover how evaluation concepts can facilitate planning your program (includes initiatives/interventions/processes) for a more successful implementation. This is a case-based workshop and you are asked to bring real life examples of programs/initiatives/processes that you want to evaluate. Evaluation cases will also be used. This workshop will benefit those who need to plan a program and/or develop an evaluation plan for an already established program.

Economic evaluation: Costing
February 4, 2027 | 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.

This workshop is designed to describe different approaches and definitions of costing including: fixed vs. variable, indirect vs. direct, and dark green vs. light green. The workshop will include a combination of didactic teaching and group exercises to explore this topic.

Economic evaluation: Priority setting and resource allocation
March 4, 2027 | 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.

This lunch and learn will offer participants an introduction to PSRA, and an opportunity to explore principles and applications through a combination of didactic teaching, exercises, and discussion. It will begin by introducing the two main principles of health economics (scarcity and opportunity cost), and present the three frameworks for PSRA from ethics, political science, and economics. Participants will learn about the theory of multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) that underlies these frameworks and have the opportunity to apply the knowledge they gain through a group exercise.

Logic models for planning and evaluation
April 16, 2027 | 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

A logic model is the core of program planning and evaluation. It illustrates what the program is planned to do and accomplish. A logic model is a tool used to facilitate transparency during the planning and evaluation process, anticipate unintended consequences and guide the selection of outcomes. The workshop will cover basic components of logic models and you will learn how to develop one for your program.

Implementation science 101: Part 2
February 9, 2027 | 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

This two-session workshop will introduce you to key concepts and principles of implementation science; present theories, models and frameworks used in Knowledge Translation (KT) and implementation science; describe methodological approaches for the practice of KT and implementation science; introduce strategies to implement evidence-informed interventions and change practice in health settings; and walk through different techniques to select implementation strategies. Learners will hear examples of how Fraser Health teams have used implementation science to guide the implementation of evidence-based interventions in a variety of settings across Fraser Health.

How to publish your work in an academic journal

Publishing in a journal is one way to make sure that your research project has impact. And it looks great on your résumé, too! This workshop will help you understand how journal publishing works, how to choose the right journal, and how to maximize your chances for successfully becoming an author.

Introduction to knowledge translation

This workshop will provide you with an overview of the basic aspects and current state of KT in health research and care. You will be introduced to terms and concepts used in the field and arguments for why KT must be done and by whom. You will be introduced to core elements to include in a KT plan and provided with an overview of KT planning tools and guides.

Foundations of equity, diversity and inclusion in research and evaluation
November 24, 2026 | 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

The goals of this workshop are to introduce learners to basic EDI terms and concepts, as well as skills and competencies required to embed EDI principles in research. We will also begin to explore strategies to promote EDI in research. While the session focuses on research, the topics will also be relevant to those working in quality improvement, evaluation or other areas where EDI and responsiveness to diverse populations are important.

Introduction to learning health systems: Continuous improvement through cycles of learning

Through real-world examples, the workshop will demonstrate how learning health systems (LHS) have been applied in practice to address complex health care challenges and accelerate evidence-informed decision-making.
