Dental Care

Take care of your teeth

Good dental health is important to your health and your baby. During pregnancy, hormonal changes can make you feel nauseous and can make your gums more sensitive.

Any bacteria from tooth decay can be passed on to your baby so it is important that you take care of your teeth.

Keep your mouth healthy by:

  • Brushing your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste
  • Flossing twice a day
  • Cleaning carefully along the gum line
  • Do not brush your teeth for 30 minutes after vomiting. Instead, rinse your mouth with water or a fluoride mouth rinse.
  • Rinsing your mouth with water after snacks
  • Eating healthy foods and limiting foods that are sweet or stick to your teeth
  • Scheduling regular dental cleanings and check-ups

Dental visits are safe

A dental visit is recommended during pregnancy and regular dental cleanings and check-ups are safe at any time during pregnancy.

  • If you have healthy teeth, you will have less tooth decay which can lower the risk of you passing the tooth decay causing bacteria to your baby.
  • Any pain, swelling or infection in your mouth should be treated right away because this may affect your health and your baby's health.
