Thank you for your interest in volunteering at Surrey Memorial Hospital (SMH) and/or the Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre (JPOCSC). Volunteer involvement is essential to the quality and continuity of health care services. At SMH and JPOCSC, volunteers fulfil a unique and important role and are highly valued members of the health care team. For this reason, Volunteer Resources takes special care and time in the selection and placement of volunteers. Review the information below about where and how to get involved.

Surrey Memorial Hospital (SMH) Auxiliary:

Formed in 1947, the SMH Auxiliary is a group of community members who give thousands of hours annually to support health care in the Surrey community.  Areas of involvement include:

  • Gift Shop – assist with retail and customer service in the onsite gift shop.
  • Lottery Booth – provide customer service and ticket sales in the onsite lotto booth.
  • Gift Cart – accompany the mobile cart to offer hospitalized patients an opportunity to purchase items at their bedside.
  • Penny Savers’ Thrift Shop – help with customer service, cashier and organize gently used items in the offsite thrift shop.

Community Volunteers

Community volunteers contribute by providing information, wayfinding, clerical, social, emotional, and/or psychological support in the following areas:

Volunteer Requirements

Volunteers must meet these requirements:

  • Application, Screening, Interview, References, Orientation and Training
  • Criminal Record Check (for most areas)
  • Minimum age of 16-18 years old (depending on the program)
  • Minimum commitment of 6 months to a regular schedule (shifts range from 2-6 hours once or twice a week)

Application Process

  1. Visit www.govolunteer.ca (keyword search: SMH or JPOCSC) to check if there are any current openings in the volunteer programs that you are interested in before completing the application form.
  2. Download and submit completed application form to the Volunteer Resources Department.
  3. Attend an interview, if suitable placement is available.
  4. If selected for placement, attend a general orientation, program orientation and training.

Placements are based on interests, abilities, schedule and the availability of a suitable position. Applications are kept on file for six months and reviewed regularly.

Volunteer Intakes will take place in February, May, August and November 2018.
