Become a volunteer at Langley Memorial Hospital and Long Term Care.

Volunteers are important members of the health care team. They offer service and support to our patients, families and visitors, while enhancing patient care and the overall experience at Langley Memorial Hospital and long term care.

Opportunities (19+)

  • Langley Memorial Hospital Auxiliary: The purpose of this organization, through its individual members, is to promote and advance the welfare of the hospital through service to the hospital and its patients and residents and through fundraising in a manner satisfactory to the person in charge of the Langley Memorial Hospital operations and in harmony with the planning of the community.
  • B.C. Pets and Friends / St. John Ambulance Pet Therapy: Visit with patients, families, visitors and staff who need a little pet connection.
  • Auxiliary Gift Shop: Support the Auxiliary to Langley Regional Hospital with customer service, cashier duties and organization of stock items. We are specifically looking for volunteers available Wednesdays in the afternoon and evening.
  • Musical volunteers: Entertain residents in Long-term care and in the hospital. Must audition and play one of the following instruments; violin, piano, guitar, harp.
  • Long-term care social visits: Visit with residents in Long-term care and PATH. Visits are to be conducted between the hours of 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. or 1:00 -4:00 p.m.
  • ER host: Work in the Emergency Room supporting staff and patients. Must be unflappable in a crisis. Ideal for those interested in going into the medical field.
  • Real Time Patient Experience Survey volunteer: Visiting all acute care units and doing survey’s with patients, and visitors in the hospital using an iPad. Flexible shifts and days. Must be tech comfortable and friendly. Availability Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
  • Welcome desk volunteers: Volunteers assist patients and site guests to navigate their way throughout the Langley Memorial Hospital campus. Volunteers in this role must be very comfortable working with the public and comfortable with approaching people to ask if they need assistance. Exceptional customer service and communication skills are required for this role.
    Availability: Tuesday, Thursday morning, Friday, Saturday afternoon and Sunday afternoon.

Volunteers must meet the following requirements to be a successful candidate:

  • A current criminal record check and references
  • Minimum age: 19 years (excludes VolunTEEN Program)
  • Minimum commitment of six months
  • Proficient in English
  • COVID-19 vaccine (minimum 2 shots)

Are you ready to volunteer?

Please take the time to consider if volunteering with us is the right decision for you. A minimum of six months commitments and 75 hours are required prior to qualifying for a reference. The onboarding process takes between two to six weeks depending on when you apply.

Applications must be received online and online learning modules are required. If you are not computer proficient please ask a friend or family to help you navigate the online learning system. These requirements support excellent care and provide you with a good foundation for volunteering in health care. We appreciate you taking the time to consider if this is the right choice for you.

Opportunities (16-19)

  • Summer Youth Program: For the months of July and August. This eight week program is for youth to work with recreation staff in Long-Term Care at Langley Memorial Hospital. Intake for this program will start June 1-June 14, 2023.
    Do not apply under the adult application portal; Summer Youth portal will open June 1 - June 14. Applications must be submitted under the youth application.

VolunTEEN Opportunities – 16 to 18 years

Requirements

Volunteers must meet the following requirements to be a successful candidate:

  • All VolunTEENS must reside or attend school in Langley
  • Mandatory compliance to Fraser Health Influenza Policy
  • COVID-19 vaccine (minimum 2 shots)
  • Age: 16 - 18 years. Parent/Legal guardian consent required under age 18
  • Minimum commitment: October 2, 2023 - June 30, 2024, weekly two hour shifts, Monday to Friday (4:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.)
  • Mandatory Fraser Health orientation – October 2, 2023
  • Mandatory shifts at Penny Pinchers – Summer of 2024
  • Must have completed a minimum of 70 VolunTEEN hours and the required program prior to a reference letter being issued

VolunTEEN Team Lead:

  • Returning VolunTEEN student
  • Must have completed a minimum of 50 hours in the 2023 program
  • Must demonstrate leadership, maturity and commitment to their role
  • Must commit to 80 Hours for 2023 - 2024 program
  • Mandatory shifts at Penny Pinchers – Summer of 2024
  • Mandatory compliance to Fraser Health Influenza Policy
  • COVID-19 vaccine (minimum 2 shots)
  • Age: 16 - 18 years. Parent/Legal guardian consent required under age 18
  • Mandatory Team Lead Orientation: September 27, 2023 (afterschool)

Application process

Online applications are open September 1, 2023 9 a.m. - September 14, 2023 12:00 p.m. Incomplete or late applications will not be considered. Only candidates who qualify for available positions will be contacted for an interview.

  • Step 1 Application: If selected for an interview you will be contacted by September 15.
  • Step 2 Interview (September 21 - 27, 2023): If selected as a VolunTEEN you will be contacted by September 28 and be required to proceed with the screening, online learning and in-person orientation.
  • Step 3 Screening: Criminal record check and two references will be required.
  • Step 4 Orientation (October 2, 2023 - afterschool): Mandatory completion of new volunteer orientation curriculum and group orientation session.
  • Step 5 Placement: Training and placement following orientation.
