Volunteer program opportunities
Volunteers provide information, wayfinding, clerical, social, emotional, and/or psychological support in the following areas:

Surrey Memorial Hospital Auxiliary
The Surrey Memorial Hospital Auxiliary is a group of community members who give thousands of hours annually to support health care in the Surrey community. Areas of involvement include:
- Lottery Booth: Provide customer service and ticket sales in the onsite lotto booth.
- Gift Shop: Provide customer service and complete sales at the onsite gift shop.
Student Translating Information for Research (STIR) Program
The Student Translating Information for Research (STIR) Program at Surrey Memorial Hospital (SMH) offers undergraduate students a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in clinical and applied health research within a hospital setting.
Modeled after BC Children’s Hospital Pediatric Emergency Department START Program, this initiative is designed to foster early exposure to clinical research, patient encounters, data entry and analysis, and evidence-based practice in an academic hospital environment.
- Eligibility:
- Undergraduate students currently enrolled or recently graduated, preferably in health sciences, life sciences, or related disciplines.

- A brief statement of interest in the STIR Program

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
The minimum age requirement for this volunteer program is 20 years old. Placements in the NICU are currently offered to in-house volunteers who have completed 75 hours or more of volunteer service.
Community partnerships
Surrey Memorial Hospital affiliates with various community volunteer agencies.

Surrey Hospice Society: Visitation volunteers provide support to terminally ill patients and their families and friends on the Surrey Memorial Hospital palliative care unit.

Pets & Friends and St. John Ambulance: Trained Dog Therapy teams visit with patients and clients who love animals.
Requirements
Volunteers must meet the following requirements to be a successful candidate:
- Criminal Record Check
- Minimum age: 16-20 years (depending on the program. Parent/Legal Guardian consent required under age 18.
- Minimum commitment: 6 months (one shift per week on a consistent day)
- Aligned with the BC Centre for Disease Control’s vaccination recommendations for Health Care Workers, the following vaccinations are highly recommended:
- Measles, mumps, rubella
- Varicella (chickenpox)
- Hepatitis B
- Pertussis (whooping cough)
- SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19)
- Influenza

Only candidates who qualify for available positions will be contacted for an interview. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Applications are kept on file for consideration for four months.

- Step 3 Screening: Criminal record check and two references will be required
- Step 4 Orientation: Mandatory completion of new volunteer orientation curriculum and virtual group orientation session.
- Step 5 Placement: Training and placement following orientation
